Everyone and their blog are doing a “Best [ ] of 2009,” so I figured I’d take a step back and instead see what I think the best movies of yesteryear were. I went up and down the list of movies released in 2008, and this is what I came up with for the films that I believe stand the test of time. Or at least the test of one year.

- The Dark Knight - Yes, at 152 minutes it’s a bit long, and yes, Christian Bale overdoes the voice sometimes, but The Dark Knight manages to avoid the failings of other sequels and comic book movies and instead is a gritty drama about a corrupt city and the people who try to live in it. But the real reason TDK will last for years lies in Heath Ledger’s gripping, masterful turn as the Joker.
